First, a word on the Naturist Village of Cap d'Agde

The Naturist Village of Cap d'Agde was founded in the 1970s as an extension of classic naturism: living, swimming and sunbathing nude, in a private, purpose-built setting. Over the following decades, a freer atmosphere developed alongside it, particularly in the evenings and in certain specific areas, giving rise to a vocabulary of its own. That vocabulary — often misunderstood or distorted by search engines and unreliable blogs — is what this guide sets out to clarify.

1. What is candaulism?

Candaulism (the person who practices it is sometimes called a "candaulist") is a practice in which one partner takes pleasure in the other being looked at, admired or desired by a third party — without this necessarily going beyond a look. The term comes from King Candaules, a figure from Greek mythology associated with this theme of a man displaying his own partner to another.

At Cap d'Agde, candaulism is one of the practices associated with the Village's more liberal, "libertine" atmosphere. It's worth distinguishing it from two related but different concepts:

Classic family naturism on one side, and a freer, more "libertine" atmosphere on the other — different crowds and different intentions sharing the same space, without one imposing its rules on the other.

In practice, this means the Village doesn't have a single atmosphere. You'll find:

➔ Couples who are curious about the more assertive atmosphere of certain evenings or venues, without necessarily taking part themselves.

Nothing is imposed on anyone: every visitor chooses their own neighbourhood, beach, schedule and level of involvement. It's precisely this coexistence — this "mix" — that gives Cap d'Agde its identity, very different from a classic naturist campsite or a closed swingers' club.

3. Côte-à-côtisme

Côte-à-côtisme (literally "side-by-side-ism") describes a specific situation: several couples share the same space — a towel laid down next to another on the beach, a patch of grass, an evening at a club — without this implying any exchange between them. People are simply "side by side," sharing an atmosphere, with no obligation to go any further.

This is an important concept to understand before a first stay: at Cap d'Agde, physical proximity to other couples never implies an automatic exchange or an unspoken expectation. Watching, chatting, and enjoying the setting without ever taking things further is a practice that's just as common as it is respected — everyone's own pace is the rule, not the exception.

4. Swinging, voyeurism and exhibitionism — the other terms you'll come across

These three terms come up often in searches about Cap d'Agde, and are worth clarifying too:

➔ Swinging refers to a consensual exchange of partners between two or more couples. It's the best-known practice among the general public, and the one most often meant by terms like "swingers' clubs" or "the lifestyle".
➔ Voyeurism means observing other people in an intimate context without taking part. It's a widespread practice at Cap d'Agde, particularly on certain beach areas or at club evenings, where watching without participating is a perfectly accepted stance.
➔ Exhibitionism, conversely, means showing oneself, with the implicit consent of the setting one is in (the clubs and dedicated areas are designed for exactly this — unlike public spaces outside the Village).

Are these practices mandatory at the Village?

No — and this is the most important point of this guide. The Naturist Village of Cap d'Agde is, first and foremost, a seaside destination where "classic" naturism — swimming and sunbathing nude, with no ulterior motive — is by far the majority experience during the day. Libertine practices exist and are clearly identified (certain beaches, certain clubs, certain evenings), but nothing is imposed outside those specific areas and times. You can absolutely spend a fully classic naturist stay, as a family or as a couple, without ever encountering them.

Consent: a non-negotiable rule
